Notice of Race & Sailing Instructions
A. Season Race Schedule:
1. Fall Series Sundays 2010: Oct. 24, Oct 31, Nov 7, 14, 21, Dec. 5, 12, 19, 2010
2. Spring Series Sundays 2011: Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17, May 1, 2011.
3. Awards Banquet: May 1, 2011.
B. Rules:
1. The racing will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing, USSCA class rules and
these NOR/SI and any amendments thereto
2. Racing is open to all. Membership in Barrington Yacht Club is not required.
3. Racing will start at 1300 hr. with no race starts after 1500 hr. Weather permitting the race committee
will attempt to start a maximum of 6 races in any given day.
4. No equipment shall be worn for the purpose of increasing your body weight.
5. A USCG Approved PFD must be worn at all times. Inflatable PFD’s are not to be used.
6. Racers shall not leave the shore until the race pennant (Sunfish flag) is flying.
7. A dagger board retention device must be utilized at all times. We’ve agreed that the “new” board,
made of any material, will be allowed.
8. A 14’ x 1/4” bow line secured on the bow handle must be installed at all times.
9. A main sheet retaining device shall be used between the two boom blocks such as the mainsheet is
not a choking hazard
10. All skippers must have numbers on sails. In the event of skippers having the same numbers, the
racer registered first will keep their number. Others must change. Duct tape is unacceptable for
sail numbers.
11. Daily, Series and Season Awards will be given in A, B, and Masters.
C. Class: Sunfish
D. Fees:
1. Season Registration: $100, or $50 for College/High School Students
2. Series Registration (Fall or Spring): $65, or $25 for College/High School Students
3. One Day Registration: $10, or $5 for College/High School Students
4. Season’s Storage: $50
5. Discount: $10 (on Season Fee only) for BYC, USSCA, or USSA member.
E. Scoring:
1. In accordance with Appendix A4 of Racing Rules. There will be no throw outs
2. Series and Season qualifier is to start or rank as a starter in at least 51% of the races completed.
a. If 4 or fewer races are held on any given day, competitors on that day will receive
qualifying credit for the average number of races held on all other race dates.
3. Races Raced Credit available for RC Duty. Racers seeking credit can apply directly to the
Scorekeeper, in writing, for each specific situation.
4. The series will be scored using average score of races started based on a low point system.
5. Three Fleets will be scored if there are three or more boats in a fleet.
A Division –Any racer choosing to sail in this class
B Division- Any racer choosing to sai in this class
Choice between A and B must be made at start of season, or competitors first race,
competitors can move up to class A from B, But once designated class A cannot move down to
class B.
Masters (55 and over)- determined for the day, among starters 55 and older: determined
for the series and season, among qualifiers 55 and older.
F. Sailing Instructions:
1. The races will take place in the Barrington and/or Warren Rivers, either in front of the clubhouse
or down the river in the vicinity of Warren Town Beach, or south of the "spindle".
2. The RC will be stationed aboard a BYC motorboat or on a club dock. Courses will be determined
by the RC and announced by hail.
3. Marks will be government buoys and/or set marks.
4. All fleets will start together.
5. The starting sequence will be by audible signal with the following intervals This replaces, RRS 26 and
Appendix S:
a. Warning - 5 short blasts -
b. 2 minutes - 2 long blasts
c. 1 minute 30 seconds - 1 long blast followed by 1 or 3 short blasts
d. 1 minute - 1 long blast
e. 30 seconds - 3 short blasts
f. 20 seconds - 2 short blasts
g. 10 seconds - 1 short blast
h. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, seconds - 1 short blast (each second)
i. Start - 1 long blast
6. The RC will attempt to hail boats that are early. Flags will NOT be used.
They will be announced
verbally as “#___ over" "general recall" with appropriate sounds.
7. Starting penalties, (RRS 30) India, Zulu and Black, will be announced as “______Flag".
8. Failure to hear any of these hails is not a valid reason for redress.
G Courses:
1. The courses will be announced by the RC prior to the starting sequence. All course
announcements will be VERBAL. Racers should stay close to the committee boat to hear the
announcements
2. The last race of the day MAY be modified so as to finish at or near one of the club docks.
3. The starting line will be between an orange flag on the Signal Boat or Dock and an orange ball on
one side of the Signal Boat, or other designated anchored or fixed object.
4. Change of course; after the start, the RC may change the course by moving a mark or marks without
signaling to maintain it's original configuration as long as no competitor is on that leg of the course.
5. Gate marks MAY be used as the leeward mark.
6. The Race Committee reserves the right to add an offset mark to the windward mark. If used, it will
be left to port after rounding the windward mark. If used it is a mark of the course and will be announced
by hail.
H. Penalty:
1. The penalty for a rules infraction is to be a turn to include 1 tack and 1 gybe. This changes RRS
44. The hail “protest” from a racer to another puts the “hailee” on notice. Flags are not required.
2. Protests will be held before awards are presented.
I. Awards:
1. Daily awards will be won by the 1st place finisher in each fleet.
2. An award will be won by each member upon winning their first race of the year.
3. Awards will be won by the qualifying fleet winners of each series and the season.
4. Series and season awards will be given at the Awards Banquet.
5. To win any award the racer must be current with all appropriate fees.

WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF ASSUMPTION OF RISK:
In consideration of Sarasota Sunfish Senior Sailing Association
allowing me to participate in the 2009-2010 Frostbite Series (the “Series”), I recognize and understand that
the Series is voluntary in nature and participation is at the invitation of the SSSSS I recognize that
I incur risks attendant to sail and water-related activities, particularly in cold weather, and I assume the risk
of any bodily injury that I may incur while participating in the Series. I fully agree to waive any and all
claims, charges, losses and liabilities, including those caused by negligence, that BYC and Fleet 155, Their
respective officers, directors, trustees, employees, members, volunteers or agents might have for, and agree
that BYC and Fleet 155, their respective officers, directors, trustees, employees, members, volunteers or
agents shall not be liable for, any bodily injury to myself incurred while I am participating in the Series or
which may arise from, or in any way be in connection with, the activities of the Series and/or its organizers.
I am aware that the activities may involve maneuvering a boat, sailboard, or other watercraft in deep
waters in potentially hazardous conditions which may include, without limitation, cold water and/or air
temperatures, strong winds and currents, high waves, sudden and unexpected immersion in deep waters and
collision with other watercraft or stationary objects such as docks, pilings and buoys. I understand that I am
responsible for my actions while I may be (1) participating in the Series and (2) on the grounds of BYC. I
further hereby release, and discharge BYC and Fleet 155, and their respective officers, directors, trustees,
employees, members, volunteers or agents, from any and all negligence, liability, damage, injury, loss, cost
or expense, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, incurred by me and arising in connection with or as a
result of my participation in the Series.
